Lionsgate scored a triple win on the national home video charts the week ending Jan. 24, as the sci-fi actioner Gamer, with a mere $20.5 million in theatrical receipts, topped all three charts.

Lionsgate typically saves some of its moderately successful theatricals for January and February DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases, when major-studio menus are light. As a result, the mini-major is able to dominate the charts in those months, racking up significant sales and rentals.

Gamer debuted at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week, with the previous bestseller, Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All by Myself, another Lionsgate release, falling all the way down to No. 8.

Gamer also was the top-selling Blu-ray Disc release of the week, with Nielsen research showing that 31% of the title’s total first-week sales were on the Blu-ray Disc format.

As previously mentioned, Gamer was released on DVD & BluRay this past tuesday. I made captures for the site from the film, dvd menus and behind the scenes featurette and you can now browse them in the gallery. Clips will follow soon!

Regarding the film. I will just say that I really hated it personally if I am being honest. There were some scenes that looked quite unlike anything I had seen before but ultimately this just was not for me. However, I truly adored Michael as Ken Castle! Michael has only done four films but I will easily rank this as my favorite movie project of his simply for him alone. Granted his other movies aren’t really substantial in terms of screen time so it’s not a “fair” judgment, but he really was awesome in this! I died of laughter several times, he was the perfect evil genius! Although he is in a ‘villain’ role it truly is nothing like Dexter and fans of his looking for some more of his work would be wise to check this one out, Michael makes it totally worth seeing!

Warning: Some of the caps contain spoilery imagery so If you plan on watching, view at your own risk.

You can order on via <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=gamer&x=0&y=0" target=_"blank">Amazon or if a location is available for you, rent from Redbox if you like.

I have already gotten my copy and made caps. I will be uploading these probably tomorrow and I will be adding clips to the site as well.

By the way, I have more Golden Globes coverage to add but I’m currently having problems with my resizing program so it’s taking a little longer than I’d like. Going to try and get these up for everyone tomorrow if possible.

In the not too distant future, Kabel (Gerard Butler), a death row inmate, has unwittingly become a pop culture hero. Every week, millions worldwide tune in online to watch him and hundreds of other convicts battle in Slayers, an ultra-violent multi-player online game invented by technological genius Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). To the wealthy young gamer who controls his every move, Kable is just a sim (simulation) character. To the resistance group that opposes Castle’s games as high-tech slavery, he is a critical element in their battle to take down the inventor. Caught in the crosshairs of two opposing forces and under the command of a teenager’s remote device, Kable must use his extraordinary fighting skills to escape the game, bring down Castle and overthrow the system.

It has been a long time since we have heard anything about Michael’s upcoming film Game. Well, the future trapped-in-a-video-game thriller had its first test screenings, and the results were not great.

According to an Ain’t It Cool News source that was in one of the screenings, the Gerard Butler-starring Game is a terrible fail and in need of a complete overhaul from start to finish. Even more disappointingly, Michael C. Hall and Butler’s incredible acting abilities are buried under a mass of poor action scenes and bad dialogue. It’s not surprising that the producers of Crank would unleash a fast paced movie that may be a bit confusing at times, but it’s a dreadful shame to think that Hall and Butler aren’t being fully utilized. Some minor spoilers below the cut.

In Game, convicts take part in a kind of video game, being controlled remotely via brain chips by viewers. The game is a brutal online fight where many will perish. Michael C. Hall, of Dexter fame, plays the villain and Gerard Butler plays the action-figure man controlled from a far.

Sexy Whisk (the AICN spy) insists that the movie is, “beyond boring and the action was completely unexciting.”

Simply said:

“I’m sure most of you remember Children of Men – whether you loved it or hated it – you must agree how amazingly chaotic and action packed it was without ever having to cut the camera! Now that is talent. Game however is the complete opposite – it’s trying sooo hard to be exciting and fresh and appeal to “gamers” – its cuts from dark to computer screens to action to more computer screens to close-ups…”

The informant insists that the movie tries way too hard and delivers nothing. The action scenes are apparently so confusing they become boring, and not even Gerard Butler can save the terrible work. Also they claim that Hall isn’t used at all and got a meager few minutes on screen — and he has a weird accent.

Still this is a very early screening, and they’ve pushed the release date way back, hopefully to deal with many of these issues. Game won’t be released until the summer of 2009.
