Showtime’s complete second season of the awesome serial killer series, Dexter, is arriving on DVD August 19th. Specific box set details are forthcoming. Over the course of the twelve episodes that comprised this series’ sophomore run, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) faces his lethal “addiction” and balances his relationships with Rita (Julie Benz) and newcomer Lila (Jaime Murray) all the while skirting suspicion that he’s the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Michael C. Hall’s Dexter has been named as one of the recipients of the 67th Annual Peabody Awards, considered TV Land’s most prestigious honor that:

…recognize distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by TV and radio stations, networks, producing organizations, individuals and the World Wide Web.

The awards program, established in 1940 and administered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the oldest, most prestigious honor in electronic media.

Here’s what they wrote about Dexter:

Dexter Showtime, John Goldwyn Productions, The Colleton Company, Clyde Phillips Productions

With a premise that questions our fondness for avenging heroes – a serial killer who channels his dark urges into police forensics and the killing of other sociopaths – this Showtime series is a masterful psychological thriller and a complex and ambiguous meditation on morality.

The awards will be doled out by NBC newsman Brian Williams in a ceremony held June 16 in New York.

Last but not least, here’s a little blurb from People.com regarding Michael and Jennifer celebrating the win in Los Angeles:

Also at the Sunset Towers: Michael C. Hall, celebrating his Peabody Award with his Dexter costar and girlfriend Jennifer Carpenter.

Congratulations, Michael!

In the last quarter of last year, Showtime’s hot new series Dexter completed their second season run of 12 episodes in time to avoid the complications of the writer’s strike. Now, with the 3rd season on the horizon for a Fall 2008 start, Showtime and Paramount Home Entertainment are gearing up to release Dexter - The Complete 2nd Season on DVD a short time ahead of that.

In an early heads-up to retailers, Paramount has advised them to plan on stocking this on their shelves with a scheduled release date of August 19th. That’s almost exact a year after the release of the first season set, by the way. Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar and Julie Benz all return, of course. They are joined by Oscar-winner Keith Carradine (Nashville) playing FBI Special Agent Lundy, and by JoBeth Williams (Poltergeist) in a recurring role as the mother of “Rita” (Benz).

No further info is available just yet, nor cover art, and that date (like all scheduled dates) *could* still be subject to change. But stay tuned, and we’ll update you just as soon as the rest becomes available!

James Remar, who plays Dexter Morgan’s adoptive father on Dexter, says he’s unsure as to whether he’ll be asked back to appear on future episodes of the Showtime series (which is now seen in edited replays Sundays on CBS).

“It seems as if Dexter was distancing himself from Harry, but they haven’t let me know,” he said. “But I would love to shoot more episodes of Dexter. Dexter breaks new ground. It’s a very cohesive set. I’ve worked with really good actors on that show, especially Michael C. Hall. … It’s a guilty pleasure.”

Dexter stars Hall as a police detective who is also a serial killer. Remar, who has played killers himself quite a bit (he was the main bad guy in 48 Hrs.), said the show makes him think.

“For me, it’s opened my mind up to some stuff — the way we perceive who is the good guy and who is the bad guy, and people doing terrible things to each other — when it’s all right and when it isn’t.”

Check out an interesting new interview with Jeff Lindsay over at USA Today. He comments on Michael C. Hall’s performance:

Lindsay is thrilled with Dexter’s transformation from page to screen. “I love Michael C. Hall. When I first heard him read from the script, I thought, ‘He’s it. He’s perfect.’ “
